What is an event data recorder?
An event data recorder, sometimes called a black box, is an electronic module that stores vehicle performance data around a triggering event such as a collision.
Passenger vehicles and commercial trucks both carry them, though commercial engine control modules typically capture considerably more information.
The value is objectivity. It reports what the vehicle was doing regardless of what anyone later remembers or claims.
Commercial engine control modules may also retain data over longer periods rather than only around a single event.
What does it record?
The parameters vary by manufacturer and vehicle type.
- Vehicle speed in the seconds before impact
- Brake application and timing
- Throttle position and engine RPM
- Steering input in some systems
- Seatbelt status and airbag deployment
- Hard braking and sudden deceleration events over time
Why is timing so critical?
Because the data does not persist indefinitely. Continued operation of the vehicle can overwrite it, and repair or salvage may destroy the module entirely.
Insurers frequently take possession of a damaged vehicle quickly, and it may be sold or scrapped within weeks. Once that happens the evidence is gone.
This is why a spoliation letter demanding preservation of the vehicle and its data is among the first steps in a serious crash case.
Salvage yards and repair facilities are frequently included in preservation demands for this reason, since the vehicle may already have left the carrier's control.
How is the data used?
Most often to resolve disputes about speed and reaction. A driver claiming they braked immediately is contradicted by a record showing no brake application.
In commercial cases the module may also store hard braking events over a longer period, which speaks to driving patterns rather than just this crash.
Retrieval requires specialized equipment and a qualified analyst, and the download itself is usually conducted with both sides on notice.
Interpretation requires care, since parameters and sampling rates differ between manufacturers and a raw download is not self explanatory.

Does every vehicle have one?
Most modern vehicles do, though the parameters recorded vary. Commercial trucks generally capture more data than passenger cars.
Who owns the data?

What if the vehicle was already repaired?
