Anoxic brain injury

An anoxic brain injury happens when the brain is cut off from oxygen entirely, causing cells to die within minutes. It is common in drowning, cardiac arrest and delivery room cases, and the damage is typically permanent.

What is an anoxic brain injury?

An anoxic brain injury results from the brain being deprived of oxygen. Strictly, anoxia means a complete absence of oxygen while hypoxia means a reduced supply, though the terms are often used together.

The distinguishing feature is that no impact is required. The injury arises from the interruption itself rather than from any force applied to the head.

Brain tissue is exceptionally intolerant of oxygen deprivation, and damage begins within minutes rather than hours.

Certain regions are more vulnerable than others, which is why memory and coordination are frequently affected even where other functions are preserved.

It is frequently the underlying diagnosis in cases where the question is not what struck someone but how long a preventable interruption lasted.

What causes it?

The causes are unified by interruption of oxygen delivery rather than by any single mechanism.

What unites them is that each is frequently preventable with adequate monitoring or supervision.

How do these claims arise?

Facility cases also produce them, including choking incidents in nursing homes where supervision or diet texture was inadequate.

Drowning claims involve premises and supervision questions, particularly at pools where lifeguarding or barriers were inadequate.
