If your family member cannot manage decisions, saying so early starts a process that takes time. Informal arrangements work until the moment they do not.
Keep a plain daily record
What care was needed, who provided it, how long it took. Family members providing unpaid care are supplying something with real value that cannot be reconstructed afterward.
Preserve whatever caused it
The vehicle, the machine, the equipment. Once repaired, scrapped or returned to service, the mechanical evidence is gone and the other side's account fills the space.
Do not sign anything final
An early release binds permanently, may bind someone who lacked capacity to agree, and closes off every layer of coverage nobody has looked for yet.
