This is not a freak category. It is a predictable consequence of how material gets moved. There is a distinction worth understanding at the outset. Debris that fell directly from a load is one thing. The driver who lost the load

The company that loaded it
Where a business loaded or permitted the vehicle, its own responsibility is engaged, and it typically carries commercial coverage rather than a personal policy.
A contractor or site operator
Material deposited on a public road by site traffic is the operator's responsibility, and permits and site conditions frequently address it expressly.
Your own uninsured coverage
Where the source vehicle was never identified, uninsured motorist coverage on your own policy may respond, subject to its reporting conditions.

Where it came from, and whether you had to hit it
Both are worth understanding before an insurer frames the question for you.
Fell from a load, or already on the road
The distinction matters and it is frequently the first thing contested. Debris that fell directly from a vehicle's load engages the loading requirements and points at whoever loaded and drove it. Material already lying on the carriageway that a passing vehicle threw up is analysed differently, and the enquiry moves toward who deposited it originally and how long it had been there. Photographs of the material, its distribution and any vehicle nearby are what separate the two, and they cannot be recreated once the road is cleared.
You do not have to have struck it
Riders assume that going down while avoiding a hazard, rather than hitting it, weakens the claim. It does not in principle. Where the hazard created an emergency and the evasive action was a reasonable response to it, a claim exists. It does require careful proof, including scene evidence and any witness who saw the material and your line, which is another reason to secure both immediately.
Three rules about roadway hazards

Loading so as to spill is prohibited
No vehicle may be loaded so that its contents spill onto a roadway, and no one may permit such a vehicle to be driven. Where a load susceptible to scattering extends above the sides or tailgate, it must be fastened with rope, straps with ratchet fasteners or a similar harness and covered by a tarpaulin or other cover. Furniture, mattresses and other debris are named expressly.
Snow and ice from moving vehicles
New Jersey separately addresses snow or ice dislodged from a moving vehicle that causes injury or property damage, with penalties attached. In a county with real winters this is a distinct route where a sheet of ice leaves a roof at speed.
Shared fault reduces rather than bars
Expect an argument that you should have seen the hazard and avoided it. New Jersey reduces a recovery by the percentage attributed to the injured person and bars it only where that share exceeds that of the parties claimed against.

What it is, how much, and how it is distributed across the lane. Roads are swept and rain moves it. Hours matter here, not days.
Photograph or note any vehicle leaving
Plate, company name, type. A dump truck or landscaping vehicle a few hundred metres ahead is frequently the source.
Identify any site nearby
Construction and utility works with entrances onto the road you were on. Contractors are responsible for material their traffic deposits.
Report it, and keep the gear
A police report matters where the source may never be identified, because uninsured motorist coverage carries reporting conditions.
