How long does my personal injury case take to settle?

|

A common question that I receive from my clients is "how long will my personal injury case take to settle?" My first response is always, "if I had a crystal ball I could tell you the exact time, but I don't." This often helps to lighten the mood, because in reality it take about 1-3 years on average to conclude a personal injury lawsuit, and many clients are angered by that response. Sometimes it can ever longer depending on the complexity of the matter.

The main reason is that clients tend to treat anywhere from 6 months to a year. Then due to a heavy court docket, the case may not reach settlement or trial for another two years. Additionally, it can take a while due to adjournments. The case may not even settle and you must go to trial, and that can further delay the case.
